During his military career, Thomas was Command Chief for the Air Armament Center and the 96th Air Base Wing at Eglin AFB in Florida. He served as the principle advisor to the center installation and wing commanders and their staff, advising on enlisted personnel issues for more than 5,000 men and women who provide essential base operating support to more than 20,000 personnel assigned to the Air Armament Center, five co-located wings, and 45 associate units.

Thomas entered the Air Force in 1981 and held key management and leadership positions in the Security Forces career field including, Joint Staff positions at the US Joint Forces Command and Headquarters and US Special Operations Command. He retired after 30 years of active duty service.

He has been awarded the Airman’s Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters. In 1995, he was named the 48th Security Forces Squadron NCO of the Year and in 2002.
