A Caring Community with New Friendships for Military Widows like Marilyn

March 15, 2024

Marilyn, a radiant 91-year-old resident at Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV), fondly recalls the moment she met her husband, Jack, at a bustling skating rink. “I was scooting along, trying to keep my balance, and just when I thought I’d fall, he caught me,” she reminisces. Their love story flourished, leading them to the altar in 1951 and blessing them with three beautiful daughters.

The life of a military family is no easy feat, marked by frequent relocations and the challenges of uprooting their lives. Yet, for Marilyn, every move held a silver lining. “Wherever he went, we’d go,” she says. Their journey together was not without its trials, but their commitment to each other and their family was unwavering.

In 2021, the couple found a new beginning at Hawthorn House, AFEV’s assisted living facility. While Marilyn was reluctant to move at first, Jack knew it would be the best place for her after he passed. Just one year later, Marylin lost her beloved husband. Reflecting on their time at AFEV, Marilyn shares, “He wanted me to be cared for and loved. Here at Hawthorn House, they’ve done just that. They baby me here… I don’t have to worry about grocery shopping, cleaning or anything!

Without the support and generosity of friends like you, Marilyn’s transition to AFEV may never have been possible. She admits, “If I wasn’t here, I’d probably still be in our old house, scared every night. I’ve never lived alone. Ever.” Your kindness ensures that Marilyn and all of our residents find comfort, companionship, and care in their golden years.

At Hawthorn House, Marilyn is surrounded by a sisterhood of military widows, each with stories echoing hers. Her days are filled with joy, from lively games of bingo to heartwarming sing-alongs when a fellow resident plays the piano. “It takes me back to my childhood,” Marilyn reminisces. “My mother played, and we’d all sing along.

Marilyn is especially grateful for the dedication and compassion of the AFEV staff. She exclaims, “They are just amazing. Every need, every concern – they’re right there to help you.”

Marilyn’s initial reservations about relocating to AFEV have been replaced with heartfelt gratitude. When asked if she has any regrets, Marilyn responds, “Oh heavens no! I can’t believe I was the one dragging my feet. Jack knew this would be the best place for me and he was right.”

It’s your support that has not only transformed Marilyn’s life but has also enriched our entire AFEV community. Your generosity paves the way for stories of hope, resilience, and love to flourish within this one-of-a-kind community for our deserving military widows. Because of YOU, Marilyn wakes up with a smiling and grateful heart each day.
