August is Make a Will Month: Why Creating a Will is Essential

August 14, 2024

August is Make a Will Month, a time to highlight the importance of having a will. Creating a will is not just about distributing your assets; it is an act of care that ensures your wishes are honored, your loved ones are protected, and your legacy is preserved.

A will is a legal document that details how you want your estate to be managed and distributed after your passing. Without a will, the laws of your state will determine how your assets are divided, which may not align with your wishes. This can lead to confusion, family disputes, and even financial hardship for your loved ones.

One of the most critical reasons to create a will is to ensure that your loved ones are cared for. This is especially important if you have minor children, as a will allows you to designate guardians to look after them. You can also make provisions for family members with special needs or dependents who rely on you for support.

A will also allows you to leave specific instructions for the distribution of your assets, such as property, savings, or cherished personal items. By clearly outlining your wishes, you can make the process smoother for those left behind.

In addition, creating a will gives you the opportunity to support the causes and organizations you care about through charitable bequests.

A bequest in your will or trust can support Air Force Enlisted Village for generations. You can name a percentage of an estate, specific property, or a certain cash amount. Example language for wills and trusts:

“I hereby give, devise, and bequeath to Air Force Enlisted Village Foundation, Inc., 92 Sunset Lane, Shalimar, FL 32579 (Federal Tax ID: 23-7078212), % of the residue of my estate or the sum of $ (or the following property described herein).”

Finally, having a will provides peace of mind. Knowing that your affairs are in order allows you to focus on the present, confident that your future is planned.

This August, take the time to create or update your will. It’s a simple but powerful way to protect your loved ones and ensure your legacy lives on.
