March 11, 2025

"This is home."

Margaret, an 80-year-old resident of Bob Hope Village, found a renewed sense of purpose and community after moving into Air Force Enlisted Village (AFEV) last fall. For Margaret, the decision to join AFEV was rooted in a sense of loneliness following the loss of her husband to cancer five years ago.

“When I first arrived, I could just feel the love,” Margaret shared. “I’m so blessed to be here and to be helping others.” That love and support welcomed her from the moment she walked through the doors, easing the ache of loneliness that had grown over the years.

One of Margaret’s favorite activities at AFEV is playing cards with her fellow residents. The joy she finds in these simple, shared moments is unmistakable. She also actively participates in wellness workshops, eager to stay engaged and healthy. Margaret’s social nature shines through, asshe attends various events that AFEV provides throughout the year. Her cheerful presence has made her very popular among her neighbors. “Everybody knows me,”she says with a laugh.

Surrounded by peers who understand the unique experiences of military life, Margaret finds comfort in their shared histories. Her husband’s military service brought her into the world of military life years ago, andthat sense of camaraderie remains a vital part of her identity. “This is home,”she says.

Margaret’s children have expressed deep gratitude for the safe and caring community their mom has found. “They’re very, very, very happy,” she says, smiling. Knowing that their mother is surrounded by kindness and support has brought them peace of mind.

“I’m no longer lonely,” Margaret adds, her voice filled with emotion. The friendships she’s built and the activities she enjoys have filledher days with meaning and joy. That’s what your kindness makes possible!

Margaret also speaks highly of the AFEV staff, who go above and beyond to create a nurturing environment. “They always walk around with a smile, and they know the message of love,” she says. For Margaret, this genuine care has made all the difference.

Looking back, Margaret knows she made the right choice.“This is a wonderful place to live,” she says. Her story is a testament to the power of community and the life-changing impact of AFEV’s mission to support military widows like her. Margaret’s journey from loneliness to belonging is an inspiring reminder of why your continued support and generosity are so critical to the Air Force Enlisted Village.
